The Circular Walk was created in 1996 by Adlington Conservation Volunteers. There is no start or finish to the walk, you may join or leave at any point. For this article I have started at the Bridge Inn on Park Road and walked in a clockwise direction. This is not meant to be a comprehensive description, but just a taster of what you may find on the route, photographs were mainly taken in the winter of 2004/2005. The walk in constantly being refurbished with hard footpaths and footbridges, areas described as muddy may now have been re-surfaced, also as of 2007 the route has been newly sign posted and is now very easy to follow with small route maps on some posts.

Ok lets start, down the steps and on to the canal towpath passed White Bear Marina heading
towards Chorley. If you have not been along here before you may be surprised at now many boats are moored
by the canal. As we continue we'll pass L & L cruises
at Rawlinson Lane and just after Adlington Canoe Club
on the opposite Bank. We leave the canal at bridge No. 72,
I have always called this Dead Man's Bridge but have heard it called Idle Bridge also. Over
the canal and on to the A6, turn left here . At the traffic lights go right
back in the direction of Adlington, over Skew Bridge then left up the road towards Hall o' th'
Hill golf club.
Going up the hill, you may see club members playing a round as there are several holes
next to the road. At the top of the hill turn right over the stile. This section can be very
muddy in winter month,
but keeping left appears to be the driest side.
Continue until there is a junction in the muddy road. Over the stile on the left
and into the field, keeping on the right hand side until reaching the next farm gate and stile
and on to Slacks Lane. At the time of writing
several of the walk sign posts had fallen down but, turn right into Slacks Farm , walk through the farm until you see the
Adlington walk sign on the left. This will take you up the footpath through the
field and under a
short tunnel of trees
and then on to Bent
Row and up to Long Lane.
Please be careful on Long Lane as the cars travel quickly along this road. After turning
right we continue on Long Lane until reaching the Bay Horse Pub were we go left over the motorway onto New Road. It's about 3/4 mile until we reach Anderton
Training Centre where we leave the road by turning right and down the footpath through the kissing gate
into a small wooded area before going back over the motorway using the foot bridge
continue on to through the wood
on to Shaw Hill Drive and down to Bolton Road.
Cross Bolton Road and start walking toward Adlington, you will soon come to a small opening
with the yellow Adlington walk sign go left here and in to the fields
. This part can sometimes be hard to follow as the path seems little used
, but if you keep to the
right you'll soon come across a small wooden bridge over a stream
this is the route to take. Continue on and down some steps then over another footbridge, as
part of the continuing improvements of the walk a new bridge has been erected in the spring of 2005
Follow the path until the third footbridge and back over this stream
then over the stile
The footpath in this next section has been refurbished as of March 2005
and is now very easy to walk on and simple to follow. On your right you'll pass the
old Air-Raid shelters,
and even though very over grown the entrances can be seen, you can
even have a peep inside to see how small they really are
At the time I did this part of the walk the footpath was being refurbished as mentioned, it looked
as if the first shelter was being drained of excess water. It would be nice if the entrances were cleared
and the shelters restored to as near as their original state as possible.
Continue down the lane and under the railway bridge
, turn right here and we are into the new industrial estate, with Croft Fisheries on the left and
Adlington Cricket Club on the right. At the junction of Huyton Road and Market Street turn left again,
pass the Railway Arms and The Wagon and Horses public houses, and at the bridge on the right just after
the pub car park go down the steps and turn right along the riverbank, this part has a nice new
footpath and newly planted trees.. Under the canal then right up the steps
and back on to the canal towpath, left here and under Red House Bridge
then passing Lower Adlington Playing Fields on the opposite bank and to the finish at the Bridge Inn.
